A Scratchy Thought

A Scratchy Thought.

The word graffiti suddenly reminded me of giraffes.

Why?

I have absolutely no idea. πŸ˜‚

But then I wondered:

Why is it called graffiti in the first place?

Turns out, it comes from the Italian graffito, meaning something scratched or written on a surface, from the Greek graphein β€” to write.

So:

graffito β†’ graffiti

Nothing whatsoever to do with giraffes.

Which is mildly disappointing.

Because giraffiti sounds much more interesting.

I can already imagine a giraffe standing beside a wall with a spray can:

β€œPlease don’t disturb. I’m working on my latest piece.” πŸ¦’

And now I have another completely unnecessary question:

Why do giraffes even have that particular name?

Oh no.

Not another rabbit hole. πŸ˜‚
