A Scratchy Thought.
The word graffiti suddenly reminded me of giraffes.
Why?
I have absolutely no idea. 😂
But then I wondered:
Why is it called graffiti in the first place?
Turns out, it comes from the Italian graffito, meaning something scratched or written on a surface, from the Greek graphein — to write.
So:
graffito → graffiti
Nothing whatsoever to do with giraffes.
Which is mildly disappointing.
Because giraffiti sounds much more interesting.
I can already imagine a giraffe standing beside a wall with a spray can:
“Please don’t disturb. I’m working on my latest piece.” 🦒
And now I have another completely unnecessary question:
Why do giraffes even have that particular name?
Oh no.
